Which method is permitted (NEC 2023 / CEC 2025)
  • Standard — NEC 220 Part III (220.40). Permitted for any dwelling service or feeder, any size. Required where 220.82 / 220.83 are not permitted: a sub-panel that feeds only part of a dwelling (any size), or a feeder under 100 A.
  • Optional — NEC 220.82. Only where the total connected load of a dwelling unit is served by one 120/240 V or 208Y/120 V three-wire service or feeder with an ampacity of 100 A or more (220.82(A)). An ADU feeder qualifies at 100 A or more; a sub-panel feeding part of a house does not.
  • Existing dwelling — NEC 220.83. Checks whether the existing service or feeder of a whole existing dwelling unit (120/240 V or 208Y/120 V, three-wire) can take added loads — 220.83(A) without new A/C or space heat, 220.83(B) with it.
  • Sub-panel feeder — NEC 215.2(A)(1) and 215.3. Feeder conductors (215.2(A)(1)) and the feeder breaker (215.3) must be rated for at least the calculated load of the panel they supply; only the loads fed from that panel are entered. Code basis: 2025 CEC, based on the 2023 NEC.
